A charming devil arrives in the quiet village of Edmonton to bargain for the souls of its residents in exchange for their darkest wishes. Elizabeth should be his easiest target, having been labeled a “witch” and cast out by the town, but her soul is not so readily bought. An inventive retelling of a classic Jacobean drama, this sharp, subversive fable debates how much our souls are worth when hope is hard to come by.
Written by Jen Silverman, playwright of The Roommate, currently on Broadway starring Patti LuPone and Mia Farrow
Inspired by The Witch of Edmonton by Rowley, Dekker & Ford
Jen Silverman is one of today's most celebrated playwrights—and with good reason. 'Witch' is a smart, sophisticated, wickedly funny play which masterfully blends dark humor with thought-provoking commentary. Though set in 1621, Silverman’s language is strikingly fresh and modern, offering a new take on the old tale of what it means to make a deal with the devil. This captivating and sinister comedy is ideal for an October night at the Playhouse, as we usher in autumn with the promise of a devilishly good time."

praise for 'witch'
You need to see this play. I know. You hear that a lot. You’ve even heard it from me before. But that doesn’t make it any less true. In fact, it might make it more true. Can you trust me on that? You need to see this play. I need you to see this play."
New City Review...Silverman's approach takes a witty and fun perspective to this theatrical version with a unique dialogue (21st-century language) humor that stimulates questions regarding whether one person can influence the world."
Let’s PlayA script that contains the slickest, funniest devil you would ever want to run into...this is a play that dares to ask not so much whether we should metaphorically sell our souls, but what we should wish for in return. And what, if anything, is enough."
Chicago On StageAn intriguing tale of one witch, one devil, and four poor souls. The play immediately engages in the very first three scenes… thought-provoking and soulful storytelling."

ABOUT SCRIPT IN HAND PLAYREADINGS
Every Script in Hand playreading is a brand new experience.
At a Script in Hand playreading, there’s nothing between you and the actors on stage. These readings bring actors who’ve just met — or who’ve known each other for years — together for one day to rehearse and perform a play on a bare stage, with simple lighting — and you. The audience is in charge of conjuring the set, costumes, and atmosphere — or nothing at all. Actors, audience, and the director come together to create a special, one-night-only experience.
