Meeting the moment, we’ve designed programs for both virtual participation and in person as we meet again in our schools and on campus.
When 2020 spring musicals were canceled at high school theater departments across Fairfield County, we created a livestreamed showcase for affected students, hosted by Broadway legend Kelli O’Hara. High school students prepared, filmed, and submitted videos of songs. Ten students were randomly selected to perform and meet with Kelli on the night of the showcase, broadcast for the public on Facebook Live and on the Playhouse YouTube channel.
With the cancellation of camps, vacations, and summer jobs affecting Connecticut teenagers, the Playhouse partnered with the Shubert Theatre and Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven to create T.H.R.I.V.E, a FREE virtual camp led by local artists, activists, and organizations. The campers met three times a week over Zoom and participated in interactive workshops on topics ranging from spoken word and improv comedy to creative writing and character illustration. The program culminated on August 14, 2020 with a virtual showcase hosted by Kelli O’Hara.
We continue to stay busy with a social justice-themed reading series for kids in grades K–3, Acting for the Camera classes for high school students, as well as our summer camps. Stay tuned for more exciting opportunities!
