Dr. Polan specializes in reproductive endocrinology and infertility and hormonal issues related to gynecology patients and menopause. She received her bachelor’s degree from Connecticut College and her Ph.D. in molecular biophysics and biochemistry and her M.D. from Yale University, where she completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology, as well as her Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Fellowship. Dr. Polan received her MPH from the Maternal and Child Health Program at the University of California, Berkeley.
After serving on the boards of several public and private companies as well as participating in the scientific advisory boards of private life sciences companies, she became a managing director of Golden Seeds, an angel investing group that invests in women-led companies.
Dr. Polan’s research has involved ovarian and urologic function, with many publications in both areas. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, a part of the National Academy of Sciences and has a long-standing interest in women’s health research. She has been actively involved in international public health, working and teaching at medical schools in Oxford, England; Shiraz, Iran; Changsha, China; and Asmara, Eritrea. These medical experiences led to the publication of a medical mystery, Second Seed, in 1987 and a memoir of the surgical fistula program she initiated, A Doctor’s Journey: What I Learned About Women, Healing, and Myself In Eritrea, in 2016.
