Our celebration of 50 years of Jaws continues with this very special Script in Hand playreading about the making of the film- The Shark Is Broken

The Shark Is Broken is a witty and revealing behind-the-scenes look at the making of Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic, Jaws—the film that defied expectations to become one of the greatest movies of all time.

Stranded on a boat, three legendary actors—Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider—grapple with long delays, cramped quarters, and clashing personalities as they wait for their famously unreliable mechanical shark to work. Based on real events and co-written by Ian Shaw, the son of Robert Shaw, this critically acclaimed play takes audiences into the tense, hilarious, and unexpectedly heartfelt moments when the camera wasn’t rolling. With razor-sharp dialogue and a deep dive into the egos, anxieties, and friendships that shaped JawsThe Shark Is Broken is a must-see for movie lovers and theatergoers alike.

A “profound dive behind the scenes of the making of Jaws” –The Daily Telegraph, ★★★★

“hilariously brilliant and pure genius” –The Sunday Express, ★★★★★

And just when you thought it was safe to go back in the theater, our Script in Hand series will take an even deeper dive into the film's legacy with a reading of THE SHARK IS BROKEN, the hit Broadway play that takes us behind the scenes with the movie’s three main actors as they battle bad weather, mechanical failures, and each other to bring Jaws to life. It’s the perfect pairing for an unforgettable, cinematic summer celebration. Get your tickets now, because the buzz around this event has us thinking- we’re gonna need a bigger theater!"

JAWS has been one of my favorite films since it first made me scream when I was a boy. From the opening notes of its famous score to its glorious final shot, I’ve been obsessed with this movie's every detail for as long as I can remember. Whether teaching the film to college students or showing it to a first-time viewer, I’m always excited to share my love for this masterpiece- and I can’t wait to do just that at the Playhouse..."

ABOUT SCRIPT IN HAND PLAYREADINGS

Every Script in Hand playreading is a brand new experience.

At a Script in Hand playreading, there’s nothing between you and the actors on stage. These readings bring actors who’ve just met — or who’ve known each other for years — together for one day to rehearse and perform a play on a bare stage, with simple lighting — and you. The audience is in charge of conjuring the set, costumes, and atmosphere — or nothing at all. Actors, audience, and the director come together to create a special, one-night-only experience.
